After spending nearly two decades documenting the world's most elusive cats across five continents, conservation photographer Sebastian Kennerknecht aims to be the first to photograph all 40 species, wild, unbaited, unlured. Thirty-seven down. Three to go.
The Why
Wild cats shape this planet. Now we're making sure the world knows their names.
Concern for wildlife has never been higher. Yet most people have never heard of the Andean mountain cat, the Borneo bay cat, or the Black-footed cat, all sliding toward extinction.
Of the world's 40 wild cat species, 17 are threatened and 29 are declining. But great imagery and compelling stories about many of these animals simply don't exist yet.
Wild cats range across more than 75% of the world's land. Protect them, and you protect everything living underneath them. But you can't protect what you don't know exists.

Sebastian Kennerknecht is a conservation photographer whose work has appeared in National Geographic, the BBC, and Smithsonian. Rachel Tobias documents the expeditions, the partners, and the science that turns photographs into action.
Their work is rooted in collaboration with the local researchers and field teams who know these cats best.
